ShoutoutLA: Meet Shauna Bailey | Impressionist Landscape Artist and Wedding Painter
“…what sets me apart from others, I’m very big on capturing the mood or feeling of a moment or place in my paintings. This approach to subject matter is technically a large part of what defines Impressionism, but you don’t see many young artists applying it to their works these days, and especially not in the wedding painting industry. I got really tired of seeing wedding paintings that looked dead, or flat, or too much like a photo. I really believe that paintings should feel alive, have movement, push colors slightly past what you see in reality, or even better – capture what an incredible moment feels like when you’re really loving life. I try to bring that philosophy into all aspects of my life, I don’t believe in the mundane, I believe everything can be a little bit magical if you have the right perspective.“

“…what blows my mind about live painting is that it ultimately a grouping of some of the most difficult tasks an artist can take on. That is something that even I didn’t understand at first, despite having been an artist for most of my life. If you ask any professional painter, painting live with changing lighting and shadows is one of the trickiest obstacles you can face. That’s why the subcategory of plein air painting, or painting in open air, has so much prestige around it in the art industry. On top of that, painting for a live audience is somewhat unheard of in the art world.”
Bold Journey: Meet Shauna Bailey
“My career is one that always takes a little it of explaining *(although recently it’s become quite a popular trend) – I am a live painter for weddings and special events. In simpler terms, I’m a professional artist, however, I specialize in capturing the mood and feel of events as they happen. Typically I’m in front of a live audience, or a couple hundred wedding guests for the first portion of the painting, and then I bring the artwork back to the studio to work on it for another 30-40 hours over the next few months.
My favorite part of the job is being able to connect with my brides and grooms and find out more about their story. I always tell them that my number one goal is to translate their love story into what feels like an epic movie-worthy moment on canvas. A painting is so much more than a photo, it’s more than reality, it’s a carefully curated depiction of what reality feels like to us when we are at our bests. And I love that I get to help people experience and remember a moment for all that it can be.”
VoyageLA: Life & Work With Shauna Bailey
“I specialize in impressionist fine art oil paintings of weddings and events, typically with a live painting performance to start off the piece. I learn everything I can about the event and the client’s needs and specifications beforehand, and then I bring my easel and supplies to the venue and interact with guests while capturing the moment on canvas. I’m proud of the fact that I’m able to elevate the world of live painting, and I strongly believe that any big moment can be gallery-worthy. I’m known for my alla prima (wet on wet) palette knife style and muted color palette, and for providing clients with artwork that not only captures their memories but also looks great on their walls.”
Canvas Rebel: Meet Shauna Bailey
“My company, Bailey Art Studios, is almost two years old. I started out by selling art to Orange County home stagers and realtors who were looking to fill luxury homes with art that would help inspire buyers to take them off the market. Once I fully committed to making art full-time, I painted a little bit of everything – not quite knowing how to group my artistic skills into a set style. After a summer of being invited to paint plein air paintings live at Newport Beach’s Lido Marina Village, I realized that I was being drawn to textured oil landscapes.
From there, I started bring my landscape-centered approach to the quickly growing wedding painting industry. I saw a lack of variety in the live painting options at the time, and strongly felt that an important moments should be captured on canvas in an expressive way, using classic art techniques and compositions (rather than just replicating event photos). I’ve spent the last year attending 30+ weddings and events, capturing each one on canvas in a unique way.”
